GeoSync XG Damage Assessment Goes to Work
Pike County and numerous other Kentucky counties recently
suffered severe flash flooding. Just before 5:00 am Saturday,
May 9th, Pike County declared a state of emergency. Pike County
911 is also the pilot county for GeoSync XG Damage Assessment,
a new MapSync application streamlining the collection, compiling,
and reporting of damage assessment data during emergencies.
Data collected using this application is now in use by Pike
County 911, the Red Cross, and FEMA. Being the first major
test of the application, MapSync personnel have been on site
throughout post-flooding assessment efforts, to coordinate
the use of the software, and assist as needed.
Eight teams comprised of county employees and Kentucky National
Guard, equipped with laptop computers and digital cameras,
have canvassed the flood damaged region using the new application
to collect data. Crew members were previously unfamiliar with
the software, but after 10 to 20 minutes of training they
were up and running. According to Doug Tackett, Emergency
Management Director for Pike County, "This damage assessment
application was very easy for our teams to learn and use.
This has been the easiest and most complete picture of damage
we have been able to collect for our county."
Overall the process was a success and Pike County collected
data in a way that has never been seen before.
