New Media Manager Selection Options

Media Manager has taken some major leaps forward in some of its recent releases.  It is now easier than ever to link media files to features in your map.  The newest addition to the Media Manager tool set is the option to add media to a batch of selected features.  This is great for those that are linking construction plans to water, wastewater, gas or electric utility features.  It is very useful for those working in the field to have access to construction plans by simply clicking on a feature in their map.

I made a quick video that demonstrates how the new batch selection works.  You can access it here.

Map Books in ArcMap

While we always like to try our best to put digital maps in the hands of the people who need them the most, often it is necessary to print paper maps for those folks.  Large printouts can be cumbersome to handle, and a small map may not display all of the detail you require.  A good way to have the best of both worlds is by printing map books.  With the newest release of ArcGIS 10, you can create a map grid, and use that grid to print a map book.  It does not provide a lot of dynamic options, however, it does allow you to quickly and easily produce a simple map book which can be very useful for the field technicians in your organization.

How is it done...?  It's a three step process:

1. Create the map grid,

2. Set up the "Data Driven Pages" in ArcMap

3. Print

I made a video explaining each step.  The video can be accessed here.

Export to CAD from ArcMap

Easy way to export CAD files from GIS Data in ArcMap

Since the vast majority of water, wastewater, stormwater, electric and gas utility designs are done in CAD, not GIS software, it is often important to be able to export your GIS data as CAD data.  This can be done in a variety of ways.

Probably the most common is to import the GIS data directly into a CAD package that has that capability (AutoCAD Civil 3D, AutoCAD Map, Bently InRoads, etc.).  Since many GIS users don’t have CAD software, an alternative to this is to export your GIS data to CAD from within ArcGIS.  I recently created a video that shows how this can be done.  Click here to watch the video.
