A buffer is a drawn polygon or a polygon defined by offsetting a map feature at a specified distance so the buffer surrounds the feature. Buffers are useful in performing spatial analysis and creating selection sets. For example, create a twenty foot buffer to either side of a road centerline and then use the buffer to query other features, such as building structures.
