A layer's DBF Structure refers to the .dbf file portion of a Shapefile (layer) and the fields that comprise a map feature's attribute data structure (the data viewed with the Identify tool or Selection Report). To Modify a DBF structure means to add, remove, or change the characteristics of the fields of a particular layer.
To use:
Activate Modify DBF Structure tool.
Select the layer to update.
The layer's fields populate the list box on the left under Field Name.
Select the double right arrow button to keep all existing fields or select individual fields and then the single right arrow button to keep particular fields. Fields to be kept are then listed in list box on the right. Any fields not included in the right list box are removed from layer when the layer is rebuilt at the end of the Modify DBF Structure process.
To change the characteristics of a field, select the field from the right list box and select the Edit button.
To add a new field select New. Enter a name for the field, select the data type, and field length and then OK.
When ready, select Update Layer to complete the process.
