Snaps allow a user to lock onto a vertex of a feature when drawing or measuring (see Measure Multiple Distance). When in Edit Mode, correct use of Snaps is critical in order to create quality feature and layer geometry. For many applications it is essential that lines and polygons have true intersections, which Snaps make possible. Additionally, the features being snapped-to do not have to be on the same layer as the features being edited or drawn. A snap box always appears when snap is engaged. Pay particular attention to whether "snap to setting" is set to Vertex or Nearest.
To use:
Activate Snaps .
Next to the select the "snap to layer" from the drop down list. Note: The snap to layer always defaults to the layer being edited or current layer.
Select Snap Type from the next drop-down:
Nearest - a location on a line or polygon feature nearest the position of the user's pointer. Note: Nearest is NEVER a vertex or end point.
